Jersey City committeemen and women have sent the following letter to State Chairman Samuel Raia:
Re: Jersey City Municipal Committee Election
Dear Chairman Raia:
On June 5, 2012, I was elected to the Hudson County Republican Committee in Jersey City. As a new member of the Committee, I was excited to take part in the political process, and was looking forward to my first responsibility: that of electing a new Municipal Chairman. However I did not know when or where the meeting was to occur.
Much to my dismay, I recently discovered -- too late! -- that Russell Maffei, the current Municipal Chairman, held the meeting at an undisclosed time and place, and I had not been notified. Furthermore, I am not alone. Many other committeemen and women in Jersey City -- at least dozens and possibly even a majority -- were similarly disenfranchised.
I believe this behavior on the part of the Municipal Chair was immoral and most likely illegal; it appears that numerous NJ laws as well as the county by-laws have been blatantly disregarded and violated.
It is in this situation that I appeal to the Governor’s Office and the State Committee. During his tenure as U.S. Attorney, Governor Christie demonstrated his honesty and integrity by rounding up scores of corrupt officials statewide without respect to party affiliation. I hope that we can count on his integrity once again, this time within his own party at the local level.
I respectfully request that the Governor’s Office and/or the State Committee look into this matter urgently and act swiftly to request a new election for the Chairman and Board of the Jersey City Republican Party. I furthermore request that the standing Chairman, Russell Maffei, not be permitted to run, due to his demonstrated failure to fulfill his role with integrity.
Sincerely,
Proud Republican & Elected Member of the Hudson County Republican Committee in Jersey City
